The second season of 'Squid Game' introduces new plot twists but retains the iconic character Young-hee, a robotic doll who plays a deadly role in the series. Inspired by Chae Kyoung-sun's daughter and a character from South Korean textbooks, Young-hee has gained viral fame, serving as both a promotional centerpiece and a chilling symbol of the show's violent themes. The series continues to break viewership records, contributing significantly to Netflix's subscriber growth, while the platform invests heavily in South Korean content to capitalize on its success.
"My daughter had a bowl cut for a long time which was very cute so I decided to draw a very short bang," Chae told Reuters.
"Her eyes are a little crazy. She's a killing machine and the movement of her eyes had to be easy to see, so we made her eyes quite big."
The new season of the dystopian thriller... also broke a record as the most-watched show in its premiere week on the streaming platform, with 68 million views.
Asked about the success of the show and this particular design, Chae noted that Young-hee's creation plays a pivotal role in the series' overall impact.
