How London's excavated soil helped create a thriving wildlife haven in Essex

The success of the 740-hectare Wallasea Island nature reserve in Essex has prompted plans for further expansion, aiming to enhance its rich biodiversity.

After breaching the sea wall in 2015, the previously farmed land transformed into thriving mudflats and salt marshes, attracting diverse wildlife, such as spoonbills and black-tailed godwits.

In 2023, the reserve recorded an astounding 38,000 birds during December's Wetland Bird Surveys, showcasing its significance as a vital habitat for migratory and resident species.

With the acquisition of an additional 100 hectares, the RSPB plans to develop the reserve's first freshwater pool to benefit various wading birds and migratory ducks.
