"Western sanctions prohibit the import of the notebook-sized terminals operated by Elon Musk's SpaceX company to Russia. A heavy Russian Geran drone struck a fast-moving train in northern Ukraine on January 27, killing five, wounding two and starting a fire that disfigured the railway carriage. Early Shahed drones in 2022 were slow and often shot down by Ukrainian servicemen with small arms. Geran kamikaze drones underwent modifications that made them faster and deadlier, and some were fitted with Starlink satellite internet terminals that made them resistant to jamming and enabled real-time navigation. Western sanctions ban Starlink imports to Russia, but Moscow allegedly smuggled terminals via ex-Soviet states and the Middle East using falsified documents and foreign activation. SpaceX blocked Starlink units geolocated on Ukrainian territory and requires verification and white-listing updated every 24 hours; any terminal moving faster than 90 km/h is shut down to prevent drone attacks.
