On Friday night, a medevac jet tragically crashed in northeast Philadelphia after taking off from North Philadelphia Airport. The Learjet 55, registered in Mexico and operated by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, was en route for a flight to Springfield, Missouri, when it nose-dived nearly vertically, causing catastrophic destruction. All six aboard died, including medical personnel, while at least one person on the ground was also killed. Investigators from the National Transport Safety Board are set to analyze the wreckage and witness accounts to determine the cause of this devastating accident.
Having climbed to an altitude of 1650 feet, the plane plummeted nearly vertically at more than 200 mph. Heavily loaded with fuel for a planned 1000-mile flight to Springfield, Missouri, the plane exploded with the power of a cruise missile.
The last transponder signal, sent seconds before the crash, showed a descent rate of more than 11,000 feet per minute.
The plane was operated by a company called Jet Rescue Air Ambulance and was reportedly returning a young patient and her mother to Mexico after receiving treatment for a life-threatening condition.
In recent days the plane had traveled frequently between Haiti, Mexico, and the United States, and had suffered an earlier fatal crash in Morelos, Mexico in 2023.
