'Hitch' director reveals Will Smith feud 20 years later: An absolute 'battle'
Briefly

As the 20th anniversary of 'Hitch' approaches, director Andy Tennant reflects on the creative tensions between him and Will Smith while making the romantic comedy. Smith's initial reluctance stemmed from studio skepticism regarding the film's international viability with Black leads. Despite difficulties, including location challenges and Smith's indecisiveness just before filming commenced, 'Hitch' became a blockbuster success, grossing over $370 million worldwide on a modest budget. Tennant credits Jada Pinkett Smith for supporting the creative decisions made during production.
We had our difficulties. The movie I wanted to make and the movie Will wanted to make, neither one of those movies is as good as the movie we made together.
Jada was a big help. She kind of seconded some of my instincts. There was a time during prep when I was pushing back on a lot of crazy s-t that was happening.
Hitch earned over $370 million globally on its $70,000 budget. It became a huge success.
Will and I went to a brownstone we liked, walked up to the door, knocked on the door to see if we could get permission to shoot there.
