This was due to previous connections with official U.S. government accounts, which are transferred to the new administration. When a new president is sworn in, old accounts are archived, and existing followers are preserved and moved to the newly established official accounts of the current administration, ensuring continuity in government social media presence.
Meta spokesman Andy Stone stated that the official POTUS and White House accounts change with each occupant of the White House, impacting followers.
After a new president is sworn in, the previous administration’s Facebook and Instagram accounts are archived, preserving their followers for the new accounts.
