The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced that commercial Dungeness crab fishing will commence on January 5, improved from last year's January 18 start date.
While most crabbing restrictions will be lifted south of the Sonoma-Mendocino county line, there will be a 50 percent reduction in traps to protect humpback whales from entanglement.
Zones 1 and 2 will see their season delayed until January 15 due to poor meat quality and an inability to conduct quality testing this year.
CDFW is exploring innovative crab trap designs, such as pop-up traps, to ensure a safer crabbing process for both the crabs and migrating humpback whales.
