The Harvard Law School Library has announced an initiative to safeguard over 300,000 government data sets amidst widespread deletions by the Trump administration. The project aims to protect essential public information, as many researchers struggle with the loss of official data following the removal of thousands of government web pages. The Innovation Lab, which has thus far preserved 311,000 datasets totaling 16 terabytes, is joined by other organizations like the Internet Archive in this effort, reflecting a broader movement to retain vital government information for public use.
"Government information belongs to the public," emphasized Amanda Watson of Harvard Law School, highlighting the importance of preserving vital datasets from removal.
The Innovation Lab, led by Jack Cushman, noted the vast range of data collected by the government, impacting areas from climate studies to public health.
