"Members of the Gran Grif gang used automatic rifles to shoot at the population, killing at least 70 people, among them about 10 women and three infants," stated UN Human Rights Office spokesman Thameen Al-Kheetan, highlighting the violent and indiscriminate nature of the attack that rocked the town of Pont Sonde.
Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille condemned the assault as "an attack against the entire Haitian nation," emphasizing the need for a robust response from security forces to such heinous crimes.
Bertide Horace, a spokesperson from the Dialogue and Reconciliation Commission, reported that police officers did not intervene during the attack, fearing being outnumbered, resulting in widespread chaos and violence in the community.
"They were left to shoot anybody, everybody was running everywhere. They were walking, shooting people, killing people, burning people, burning homes, burning cars," Horace recounted the harrowing scenario faced by people in Pont Sonde.
