Hackney Council's innovative scheme to fit solar cells directly into council flats allows for cleaner energy access while saving residents 15% on their electricity bills.
The approach utilizes a microgrid solution developed by Emergent Energy, enabling rooftop energy usage directly in homes, bypassing the complexities of national grid integration.
Reg Platt of Emergent Energy emphasized the need for improved regulations about solar grids, stating that current frameworks hinder widespread microgrid adoption, despite its self-funding potential.
By 2025, 28 blocks across three Hackney estates will have solar panels installed, with an aim to provide around 4,000 solar panels generating one megawatt of electricity.
