The death of any calf in the endangered southern resident population is a tremendous loss, but the death of J61 is particularly devastating, especially since she was a female. J35 has now lost two out of her four documented calves.
Tahlequah, known as J35, demonstrated deep grief when she previously pushed her dead calf around the Salish Sea for 17 days, showcasing the emotional complexity of orcas.
