Google has temporarily disabled its Android earthquake detection feature in Brazil following a significant error where false emergency alerts were issued for a nonexistent 5.5 magnitude earthquake in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Users received the alerts around 2 AM, indicating seismic activity in the Ubatuba and Baixada Santista regions. The Civil Defense of São Paulo confirmed no actual earthquake had occurred, and Google has apologized for the inconvenience and has stated that it is investigating the cause of the false alarms, which might relate to cell phone signal detection malfunctions.

An investigation is underway as to why the alerts were triggered falsely; it seems an issue with detecting cell phone signals may have caused the malfunction.
