Germany's Pistorius: Europe must play bigger security role DW 01/23/2025
Briefly

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized Europe's increasing responsibility for its own security during an interview amidst geopolitical shifts. He reassured that NATO remains integral to this security, despite past criticisms from the U.S. He conveyed that Germany's proactive strategy includes permanently deploying a brigade to Lithuania, combat-ready by 2027. Pistorius underlined the necessity for European nations to enhance their defense capabilities independently from U.S. administrations, particularly as U.S. focus may shift toward the Indo-Pacific region, underscoring the need for European solidarity and agency in security matters.
It is German strategy, but it's not a new one. Since I came into office in January 2023, I have tried to make quite clear every day that we should not look only to the White House.
NATO is the backbone of European security, and it's in our interest and in our responsibility as Europeans to resolutely strengthen this backbone with capabilities, with forces, with ideas and leadership and money.
