A recent poll by Bitkom reveals that 88% of German voters are concerned about foreign interference in elections, particularly through social media. The survey highlighted that 45% suspect Russia to be involved, followed by the US and China. Voters emphasize the need for heightened digital policy, with 80% wanting the government to tackle misinformation issues. Additionally, 71% advocate for an independent ministry to oversee these matters. Concerns about deepfakes and misinformation are prevalent, with many voters feeling unprepared to address such threats to democracy.
The new digital ministry must be equipped with all the necessary rights and resources, needs its own budget and a digital proviso for new laws and projects.
Voter awareness for disinformation is increasing. That is an important first step against the manipulation of our elections.
