Georgia authorities have launched an investigation into the deadly collapse of a dock gangway that reportedly failed structurally, resulting in seven fatalities during a community celebration.
Walter Rabon, Commissioner of the state’s Department of Natural Resources, stated that the gangway, made of aluminum and installed in 2021, should require minimal maintenance, raising concerns over its structural integrity.
There were approximately 40 individuals on the gangway when it collapsed, and at least 20 people ended up in the water, further emphasizing the tragic nature of the incident.
The previous year, the state settled a lawsuit with Hogg Hummock residents to improve accessibility of the ferry services, having faced complaints that they did not meet federal standards for people with disabilities.
