In New Tigard, Hayden Jones awakens from cryogenic sleep only to find that he is alone and mistakenly revived without his wife's pod being processed. The revival was due to a flawed failsafe in the system that the cryogenic facility hadn't encountered in over a century. The man explaining the situation uses a language translator and explains the implications. Hayden grapples with his new reality, encountering unexpected disappointment regarding his expectations of treatment and care upon revival in the future they dreamt of.
"You freezer-boomers throw yourselves into cryopods because you're riddled with cancer, degenerative heart failure and inflated self-importance, and then expect us to thaw you out and cure what ails you?"
