Illegal repair restrictions can be devastating for farmers, who rely on affordable and timely repairs to harvest their crops and earn their income, said FTC Chair Lina Khan.
The suit alleges that Deere makes 'the only fully functional software repair tool capable of performing all repairs' on its equipment, available only to official dealers.
Farmers have long maintained they can conduct basic repairs, but the computers lock the systems from working again until an officially licensed technician intervenes.
Despite the allegations, John Deere claims it supports customers' right to repair and signed a memorandum of understanding with the American Farm Bureau Federation in 2023.
