FTC sues John Deere for 'unfairly' raising repair costs on farm equipment
Briefly

The FTC's action today seeks to ensure that farmers across America are free to repair their own equipment or use repair shops of their choice—lowering costs, preventing ruinous delays, and promoting fair competition for independent repair shops.
Illegal repair restrictions can be devastating for farmers, who rely on affordable and timely repairs to harvest their crops and earn their income.
Deere produced "the only fully functional software repair tool capable of performing all repairs" on its equipment, which was only made available to the company's dealers, rendering independent repair services ineffective.
We have and remain committed to enabling customers to repair the products that they buy," John Deere CTO Jahmy Hindman said in a 2021 Decoder interview.
