Sangham Radio, established in 2008 in Machnoor village, Telangana, is India's first all-female community radio station run entirely by Dalit women. This initiative, led by Masanagari Narsamma and her colleague Algole Narsamma, addresses various community issues, from agriculture to women's rights, embodying the voices of marginalized communities. Their grassroots broadcasts, supported by the Deccan Development Society, counter external narratives by focusing on local realities and struggles. This platform not only informs but also empowers listeners, fostering a stronger community identity and resilience among women.
This is our weapon, she says, gripping the microphone at the radio station. With this, we speak our truth.
We talk about everything from farming techniques to women's rights, from local folklore to health tips, says Algole.
Sangham Radio began as an idea born out of necessity. For years, journalists and filmmakers would record soundbites that rarely captured the true essence.
We speak because we know our people's lives. We live their struggles, says Narsamma.
