Four photographers reflect on the stories they witnessed in 2024
Briefly

"Every day I would slip on my abaya, cover my face and put on a hijab. It became like a ritual to go between the normal version of me and the version of me I needed to be on assignment in the field. As soon as I stepped through the bureau's blast doors and out into the world, I became a muted version of myself - one who stayed quiet, avoided eye contact, did not laugh, and kept her camera hidden, only to be taken out in moments when the scene was either safe enough or brilliant enough to risk it. Thankfully, Afghanistan is full of moments brilliant enough."
"Contract photographer Lorenzo Tugnoli spent weeks throughout 2024 reporting in the West Bank, where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government has dramatically expanded Israel's footprint. This reflects not only the local tensions but also the broader geopolitical ramifications that emerge from these policy changes in a region already fraught with historical strife."
