On the night of February 5, 2025, a four-alarm fire erupted in a long-vacant building in Harlem, injuring four firefighters. The blaze began around 9:15 p.m. at 108 West 138th St. and quickly spread throughout the five-story structure, posing risks to nearby occupied buildings. Over 180 firefighters were mobilized to combat the fire, employing both internal and external techniques. However, broken hydrants hampered their efforts, prompting a shift to an exterior offensive due to concerns over the building's structural integrity and severe smoke conditions.

Due to the structural stability of this building, as it was vacant for many years, and the amount of fire, we had to pull our members out of the building and go to an exterior fire attack, Woods added.
