Flooding, heatwaves, and severe storms: Can cities adapt? DW 10/31/2024
Briefly

"It's been of concern seeing so much litter and blockages in our drains and canals," said Betty Aikhoje, a volunteer with Reswaye, a Nigerian organization trying to educate people on the problems caused by dumping waste. "Trying to keep our drainages clean and clear helps us save a lot or problems with our buildings and the environment in general." Such efforts are crucial as Nigeria's largest city copes with increasing rainfall intensity while facing threats of flooding.
Experts predict that while Lagos will experience less rainfall on average in the coming years, when it does rain, it will be significantly heavier. Consequently, the importance of clearing and maintaining drains becomes evident, yet it is just one small step. Authorities will also need to focus on upgrading and reconstructing drainage systems to mitigate the risk of more frequent flooding.
The growing concern around flooding impacts is underscored by a 2023 survey of 169 city administrations globally, where 122 reported that flooding has a medium or high impact in their cities. This reflects an urgent need for adaptive strategies as urban centers grapple with the serious implications of climate change and environmental degradation.
