On January 23, current and retired members of the FDNY gathered to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Black Sunday, a day marked by the tragic loss of firefighters during a high-stakes rescue operation. The event took place at Engine Company 46 and Ladder 27 in Tremont, Bronx, and honored the sacrifice of six firefighters, two of whom died after an emergency jump from a fourth-floor window. A memorial service led by Father Joseph Hoffman reflected on the unselfish bravery of the first responders and the challenges they faced that day, including harsh winter conditions and inadequate fire hydrant access.
On the 20th anniversary, hundreds of active and retired FDNY members joined the remaining Black Sunday survivors in honoring their fallen brothers. A mass and remembrance ceremony were held on Jan. 23.
They went into dangerous situations to make sure that others were safe, Father Joseph Hoffman, who led the mass, said. They did this unselfishly and generously, thinking only about saving other people.
