Recent claims about the potential sale of Fairfield Halls in Croydon have been categorically denied by Jason Cummings, the Cabinet Member for Finance. Cllr Ria Patel claimed during a podcast that there was pressure from the Improvement and Assurance Panel for the council to consider selling the venue. Cllr Cummings refuted these allegations as completely false and stated that the panel has never instructed the council to sell the venue. He emphasized that they sought clarification from the panel, which confirmed no such directive was ever given, calling out the claims as a distortion of facts.
During a meeting with the Improvement and Assurance Panel, which oversees Croydon's local authority, claims arose regarding the potential sale of Fairfield Halls, a topic deemed false by Croydon’s Cabinet Member for Finance.
Cllr Cummings asserted there are no ongoing plans to sell the venue, stating, 'We have gone back to the panel and said this has been said, can you clarify'; they said no, they never said that in the meeting and it is completely wrong.
Cllr Patel maintained, through the podcast, that the council was pressured into selling the venue, demonstrating a significant divergence in narrative between the two councillors.
Reflecting on the accountability and communication with their oversight panel, Cllr Cummings emphasized, 'That whole story is based on one councillor lying about what has been said.'
If the panel wanted to direct us to sell Fairfield Halls, they could; we would have to do it, but they haven't.
