A spokesperson from Monte-Carlo Societe des Bains de Mer confirmed that the Palace des Neiges was acquired by their group in October 2023 and is undergoing renovation. They stated that the hotel is intended to open in December 2026, as both owner and operator. The claims that Zelenskyy purchased the hotel are entirely false and stem from a disinformation campaign aiming to portray him negatively in the international community.
The video circulated on social media claimed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy purchased a luxury hotel in France. However, this assertion has been fact-checked and revealed to be false, instigated by a malicious narrative that seeks to undermine the image of Zelenskyy.
Disinformation actors have facilitated the spread of fabricated content, including the creation of a fake website. This site was constructed simply by adding the word 'hotel' to the legitimate hotel URL, which has been in existence since 2007. The deceptive domain was registered on November 22, 2024, following the false claims regarding Zelenskyy's and the hotel's ownership.
Julia Smirnova, a specialist in disinformation, explained that the ongoing Russian propaganda narrative against Zelenskyy positions him as a wealthy individual acquiring luxury items, thereby attempting to diminish global support for Ukraine. This political tactic illustrates the use of misinformation in conflict.
