Egg prices in the U.S. are projected to surge by about 20% in 2025, largely attributed to the avian flu outbreaks and inflationary pressures. The USDA reports that high demand for eggs coupled with the ongoing spread of the virus among poultry is creating supply constraints, with the average price of a dozen eggs reaching $4.15 in December. Consumers continue to recognize the essential role of eggs in their diets, despite rising costs and purchasing limitations imposed by some grocery stores to manage supply shortages.
"Not to be the bearer of bad news, but we're in this for a while," said Emily Metz, president and CEO of the American Egg Board.
"People recognize the value in eggs, even with a slightly elevated price, and are also finding that eggs are indispensable to their daily lives," said Metz.
With the avian flu outbreaks continuing, egg prices are projected to rise by about 20% in 2025, outpacing the general 2.2% increase in food prices.
Following the avian flu's impact, the average price of a dozen eggs reached $4.15 in December 2024, reflecting a 36% increase from the previous year.
