The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has reportedly amassed $5.1 billion in unpaid tolls and violations over the past four years, exacerbated by the shift to cashless tolling. In 2024 alone, uncollected toll violations are estimated to exceed $1.4 billion, and approximately $2 billion in annual toll revenue losses are anticipated due to non-payment of new tolls. Political leaders express concern over the lack of accountability for violators, asserting that current policies discourage compliance with toll regulations and contribute to ongoing financial losses for the MTA.
Instead of hitting people with a new and very unfair toll, the MTA should have focused its efforts to get deadbeats to pay existing tolls all along.
The real problem is Governor Kathy Hochul and the Democrat-controlled state legislature have created an environment where people feel they don't need to follow the rules because there are zero consequences.
The newly surfaced estimate for toll cheating is much larger than what the MTA has indicated in prior public statements.
This level of gross negligence is criminal, plain and simple.
