Europol’s joint operation led to the takedown of the MATRIX encrypted messaging service, which was used by criminals for serious crimes such as drug and arms trafficking.
The operation, termed Passionflower, enabled authorities to intercept over 2.3 million messages in 33 languages, linking the service to significant criminal activities.
MATRIX operated differently than the public decentralized app and had about 8,000 users globally, paying significant fees for its usage, which underscores its criminal enterprise nature.
Dutch police emphasized that the technology behind MATRIX was more complex than previous criminal messaging services, making it a significant target for law enforcement.
