The Trump administration's directive mandating federal entities to reduce recent hires has led to the termination of probationary employees at the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). About 300 employees were affected, with those in programs like the NNSA Graduate Fellowship facing job loss without protection from grievance procedures. Affected employees expressed confusion about the termination process and how to manage essential employment logistics, as they received termination letters indicating that their further employment was deemed "not in the public interest" according to OPM instructions.
"Per OPM instructions, DOE finds that your further employment would not be in the public interest," the letter read. "For this reason, you are being removed from your position with DOE and the federal civil service effective today."
Sources familiar with the proceedings told Nextgov/FCW that roughly 300 employees will be impacted or affected by the termination notices.
Those who received the notices included employees in pipeline programs - including the NNSA Graduate Fellowship program, an initiative designed to give job offers following a year of working with the agency.
There is significant confusion surrounding procedures following the terminations, with employees questioning how to get employment forms and documentation, turn in government equipment and retrieve personal belongings.
