The House of Commons was poignantly quiet. Usually, the United Kingdom's parliament is a cacophony of hurrahs and demurs and shouts and pleas for order.
British members of parliament had just voted through the second stage of an historic bill on assisted dying, marking a significant shift in the UK's societal landscape.
It followed a robust, thoughtful, heartfelt, painful and affecting debate both inside and outside Westminster, reflecting the complexities and sensitivities surrounding the issue.
If it is eventually passed and enacted, it will mark one of the biggest social changes in the United Kingdom since the 1960s.
