Dramatic pictures have emerged of the first floods in the Sahara in half a century, as unprecedented rainfall in September exceeded yearly averages in several areas of south-east Morocco.
Houssine Youabeb from Morocco's meteorology agency reported, 'It’s been 30 to 50 years since we’ve had this much rain in such a short space of time,' illustrating the long-term drought reversal.
As the air holds more moisture, it promotes evaporation and provokes more storms... flooding killed 18 people last month, extending impacts to regions previously affected by an earthquake.
Predictions from scientists indicate that similar extratropical storms could persist in the Sahara's shifting weather, a concerning sign from the recent climate changes.
