"We are doing a great job," DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said on Tuesday morning when asked why the city is going to install just five miles of bus lanes in 2024, far below the required 30 miles. "No other city in this nation is able to do the numbers of bus lanes that we do." Although the statistics don’t support this claim, Rodriguez seems confident in showcasing the efforts made, diverting attention away from the disappointing numbers.
Rodriguez praised his agency's bus projects at a ribbon-cutting for the 96th Street bus lane, which opened this week after a brief spurt of opposition from some Upper West Side residents and Council Member Gale Brewer. The DOT boss suggested that the delay could be attributed to community boards and opposition, indicating a longer process than anticipated. He urged New Yorkers to advocate more for bus lanes, putting the onus on the public and local support.
