The US Department of Energy has awarded an $800 million contract for advanced nuclear fuel deconversion to four companies to boost domestic HALEU production.
The four contracts aim to enhance HALEU deconversion services, which are critical for fueling advanced reactor designs amid increasing needs for US-made fuel.
With the DoE forecasting a need of 40 metric tons of HALEU annually by decade's end, US nuclear interests are at risk without domestic production.
While American Centrifuge Operating was the only US company producing HALEU late last year, challenges remain in scaling up production in a timely manner.
