The Department of Defense has released a new strategy enabling military bases to deploy private 5G networks when commercial options do not meet operational needs.
Acting CIO Leslie Beavers stated that this strategy serves as an addendum to the 2020 5G implementation plan, emphasizing the need for a mix of network types.
DOD anticipates most installations will primarily utilize commercial 5G networks but acknowledges that tailored private solutions might augment or supplement these networks when necessary.
The strategy outlines three main objectives: aligning 5G with installations' unique needs, accelerating development and deployment processes, and expanding the Open RAN ecosystem for improved interoperability.
