According to Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard, the monkeys escaped after a caretaker accidentally failed to secure a door at the facility. "It’s really like follow-the-leader. You see one go and the others go," he said, noting that 43 out of 50 monkeys bolted out.
No one knows for sure how this will end, but according to NBC News Alpha Genesis "hopes that one-way traps containing apples will entice the animals." The focus is on safely capturing them without incident.
Despite being very young females, the Yemassee Police Department emphasized that the monkeys are not believed to be dangerous. Reports indicate they are not diseased and have not undergone experimentation.
Social media has exploded with humor over the jailbreak, with many comparing the incident to classic horror films like '28 Days Later' and the sci-fi saga 'Planet of the Apes', but the situation is not as dire as it might seem.
