The freezing of USAid funds in Malawi, a country heavily reliant on foreign aid, has caused significant turmoil, impacting healthcare and education. With the US contributing over $350 million annually, the cessation of funds is affecting critical services, including HIV medication and support for students. Already grappling with high inflation and economic struggles due to natural disasters and currency devaluation, Malawi's situation has become increasingly precarious, highlighting the essential role of foreign aid in sustaining basic services and development efforts.
Immediate impacts include funding for HIV prevention medication being stopped, while university students on US bursaries have been told to find alternative sources of support.
Malawi is already experiencing some devastating consequences, said Pemphero Mphamba, pointing to high inflation, which has been above 23% since June 2022.
