'Devastated' Switzerland grieves New Year inferno victims
""We honour the memory of those who were lost, and we stand beside those now facing a long journey of recovery. "The start of 2026 should have brought the familiar hopes and promises -- a new year with a fresh start. "For young people especially, such promises take flight on dreams and the rightful hopes of youth -- promises destined for the skies that fell too soon into the ashes of a night of horror.""
""Our country is devastated by this tragedy,""
A fire at Le Constellation, a bar in Crans-Montana, swept through a New Year’s party around 1:30 a.m., killing 40 people, most of them teenagers. The nation held a day of mourning with a minute of silence and church bells, and a remembrance service in Martigny attended by about 1,000 people and broadcast to roughly 1,400 viewers in the resort congress centre. First responders received a standing ovation. Nineteen nationalities were among the dead and wounded, including nine French and six Italian victims. Prosecutors detained bar co-owner Jacques Moretti as a flight risk while investigating the blaze.
