Sotheby's is set to hold Saudi Arabia's first major art auction on February 8, following the establishment of a new office in Riyadh. This initiative comes amid substantial cultural investments since Mohammed bin Salman's rise to power, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030's goals to diversify the economy beyond oil and boost tourism. The auction, dubbed Origins, features approximately 120 items, including artwork from both local and international artists, as well as luxury items. This event not only showcases Saudi Arabia's art but also reflects its broader economic transformation and international outreach.
In the last five years, with Mohammed bin Salman coming to power, there has been a lot of investment in culture, not only institutional, but also commercial.
The Sotheby's auction, titled Origins, will offer an eclectic mix of around 120 objects: almost half are works of art from local and international artists.
