The Irish Jesuits have revealed the names of 15 deceased priests against whom credible allegations of child sexual abuse were made. This unprecedented action highlights a commitment to accountability, resembling an effort by the Department of Education to disclose the identities of teachers with credible abuse allegations. The Jesuit Order's openness presents a significant opportunity for other victims to come forward for therapy and potential financial compensation, setting a notable precedent in addressing the historical abuse within religious institutions.
The Irish Jesuits have just named an additional 15 members, all deceased, who the order says have had credible allegations of child sexual abuse made against them.
The Jesuits have done is equivalent to the Department of Education going back through decades-worth of its files in order to find the names of teachers credibly accused of child abuse.
I am not aware of any organisation anywhere that has published a similar list.
Inviting additional victims of those teachers to come forward and seek therapy and financial redress is a significant step for accountability.
