District Attorney Jeff Rosen highlighted a serious investigation revealing illegal medical waste dumping by Santa Clara County hospitals, emphasizing the alarming risks to patient confidentiality.
Rosen elaborated on the various materials found in dumpsters, including human tissue and confidential medical information. "It’s inappropriate for hospitals, which should uphold health standards, to not adhere to waste disposal laws," he emphasized.
A significant concern raised was the reckless disposal of personal patient information: "I hope it's obvious how problematic it is that people's names and medical information were tossed out like old magazines," Rosen remarked.
Illustrating the scale of negligence, Rosen stated, "Tens of thousands of items containing hazardous waste have been illegally dumped in the last year, contrary to legal waste separation procedures."
