Cllr Adam Harrison emphasized that this project demonstrates how heritage preservation and energy conservation can coexist, ensuring the 118-year-old library is both sustainable and comfortable for visitors.
The upgrade included improving the library's ventilation, insulating roofs and walls, and fitting solar panels, thereby aiming for net-zero emissions whilst respecting the building's historical significance.
With funding from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme and various council budgets, the Highgate Library project reflects a commitment to reducing carbon emissions in historic structures.
The collaborative effort between Friends of Highgate Library and Camden Council showcases an innovative approach to retrofitting historic buildings while maintaining their unique architectural features.
