Palo Alto City Council implemented a yearly $2,000 tech expense reimbursement policy, following a salary increase to support council members' work-related costs.
Councilwoman Julie Lythcott-Haims advocated against personal financial burdens for city work, stating, 'Nobody should be out of pocket for the work of the city, particularly when the compensation is so, so small.'
Councilman Greg Tanaka expressed that he would have benefited from the reimbursement for a premium Zoom subscription, which he uses for live streaming office hours.
Concerns arose from Councilman Pat Burt about the reimbursement policy serving as a covert method to increase council salaries without voter input.
