Council Member Joann Ariola(D-32) introduced legislation to officially designate March 14th as Innocent 11 Remembrance Day during the October 10th City Council Meeting, aiming to honor the victims of a mass lynching.
Ariola explained, 'In 1891, 11 Italian men were brutally murdered. They were lynched by an angry mob in New Orleans. There was outrage both in the United States and, of course, in Italy.'
The resolution seeks to commemorate the wrongful killing of the men who were persecuted without evidence, facing outrage that eventually led to Columbus Day being established.
The Innocent 11 were wrongfully accused of murdering New Orleans Police Chief David Hennesey, enduring a trial riddled with mistrials and not guilty verdicts, yet public sentiment favored their execution.
