The Department of Agriculture reported a 35% rise in animal welfare complaints this year, with particular concern after an exposé revealed serious abuses and neglect in horse treatment.
The main issues raised by the public include suspected cases of neglect, covering poor facilities, apparent injury, perceived suffering, and lack of access to food or water.
Complaints have significantly increased across the country, as evidenced by 1,308 calls regarding animal welfare in the first seven months of 2024, a sharp rise from last year's 970.
The areas with the highest reports are Dublin, Kildare, Limerick, Galway, and Mayo, signaling a worrying trend in animal welfare concerns.
