Oakland has reached a settlement over a lawsuit aimed at political activist Seneca Scott, who faced accusations of online harassment against city staffer Brandon Harami. The resolution requires Scott to cease sharing Harami's personal details and refrain from further baseless allegations that link Harami to pedophilia. Scott's pattern of behavior had reportedly led to serious harassment, prompting the city to intervene for workplace safety. The case highlights ongoing issues surrounding anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and the risks it poses to marginalized individuals.
Harami, who works in the mayor's office, said in a declaration filed as part of the case that "accusing queer people of sexually abusing children is a common and hurtful homophobic tactic" and that "such vile accusations can put their targets at risk of physical violence by vigilantes who believe such lies and imagine themselves to be protecting children from harm."
Scott has taken to X to post about Harami, repeatedly and without evidence, accusing him of supporting pedophilia and claiming Harami's parents harmed him. Harami received harassing phone calls and emails immediately afterward.
