Jan Henric Buettner launches the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour, aiming to attract non-chess players through glamorous events and 20 million in venture capital. The tour features prominent players like Magnus Carlsen and Dommaraju Gukesh. Buettner emphasizes accessibility over traditional rules, stating, "People aren’t interested in all the rules." However, this approach is contentious, as FIDE (world chess federation) asserts authority over chess regulations, stressing the need for integrity in chess championships. Upcoming events will be hosted in several major cities, signaling a new era for chess entertainment.
"We are producing a chess product for non-chess players," Buettner says. Armed with 20 million ($21 million) in venture capital, Buettner is aiming to give chess a makeover for the masses.
"People aren't interested in all the rules," Buettner says. But the rules have been the subject of much controversy in recent weeks.
FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich expressed concerns over the integrity of chess, saying, "We want to continue to organize world chess championships according to FIDE rules."
