The landscape of higher education has transformed significantly since 2020, with emerging challenges like anti-DEI legislation, academic freedom lawsuits, and political tests affecting many aspects of college governance. In response, a coalition named Higher Ed Labor United (HELU) has formed to unify fragmented labor forces in academia. By bringing together various national unions that traditionally lacked a focus on higher education, HELU aims to strengthen collective bargaining and labor rights, fostering more robust organizing efforts through strikes, better contracts, and solidarity among workers navigating these new adversities.
