According to the law enforcement crash report, Battalion Chief Aide Barbat may have fallen asleep while driving east on Interstate 20 shortly after 3:30 a.m.
The report highlights that Capt. Greg Davies, a front passenger, struggled to alert passing vehicles of their disabled truck, which became a secondary point of danger.
After Barbat's truck rolled over, it was struck by another vehicle, leading to injuries among the crew. Fortunately, there was no suspicion of drug or alcohol use.
The crash not only hindered the operation team's goal of aiding hurricane relief efforts in North Carolina but also raised awareness on driving fatigue.
