Centenario Park, a historic site in Bucaramanga, Colombia, has faced severe deterioration due to crime and inactivity over the last thirty years. Established in 1910 for Colombia’s Independence Centenary, the park lost its community appeal and comfort. Prior plans for underground parking threatened its greenery, as they proposed the removal of a significant number of trees. In response, a collaborative effort was initiated to reclaim the park, engaging local residents, authorities, and marginalized groups to create a revitalized space beneficial for nearly sixty thousand citizens, emphasizing community participation and environmental restoration.
Centenario Park has suffered from gradual deterioration over the last three decades, affected by the proliferation of street violence and crime, leading to a loss of identity.
The innovative recovery process for Centenario Park engaged neighboring communities, public and civic organizations, and marginalized groups, creating a functional program through participatory construction.
