The Brooklyn Museum, preparing to celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2025, announced significant budget cuts due to a $10 million deficit. Layoffs will impact 10% of the staff and the number of exhibitions will decrease from 12 to 9 annually. Rising inflation and costs have exacerbated the financial challenges. While weekday events will be reduced, weekend programming will increase. The timing is especially poignant as the museum had recently announced a collaboration for Black History Month, highlighting its commitment to community engagement despite financial hurdles.
"We cannot continue to operate with the growing deficit we are carrying. No organization can continue in this way," said Brooklyn Museum director Anne Pasternak.
The cuts will also involve laying off 10% of the museum's staff, alongside a reduction of exhibitions held each year from approximately 12 to 9.
While the museum's weekday events will be reduced, weekend programming will see an increase to continue engaging the community.
The museum's plans for its 200th anniversary celebrations are now uncertain due to a $10 million budget deficit exacerbated by inflation and rising costs.
